El Contexto

Alright, so here's the scene: we're in ancient Israel, a time when the Israelites are constantly getting bullied by their neighbors. Enter the Midianites, who have been making their lives miserable. Every year, they swarm in, like locusts, snatch up all the crops and livestock, and basically leave Israel in survival mode.

Enter Gideon, our unlikely hero. When we first meet him, he's hiding in a winepress, trying to thresh wheat without getting caught. Talk about starting from the bottom. But then, an angel of the Lord shows up and drops a bombshell: Gideon is the one who's going to save Israel. Spoiler alert: Gideon is not buying it at first.

Fast forward a bit, and Gideon is now convinced (after a few divine signs, because who wouldn't double-check?). He's rallying the troops to take on the Midianites. But just as things seem to be getting ready for battle, God decides to shake things up in the most unexpected way possible.
